Research for Film magazine - Ancillary Task

This Empire film magazine has the actress which they are trying to focus on, as the largest thing on the cover, to attract attention. The main protagonist is placed slightly to the right of the cover but this still has the same effect as placing it centre would. The women's head is placed over the top of the film magazine title, suggesting that she (the picture) is the main focus and is very important. How the title is covered also suggests that the brand and the logo are so well known, we don't even need to see the entire title. The shot of the women is studio shot and this creates a professional look. The name of the actress is big and bold to also attract attention and to inform. The same fonts are used on the cover so it doesn't look too over the top and keeps things simple. The film she is starring in is also quite big and bold as it is a film magazine, so it is appealing to its target audience. The articles and pictures in the corner also grab attention through the use of exclamation marks and capital letters. We also like how the images in the corner are slightly rotated so the magazine looks more fun. There is a consistent colour scheme on the cover of blue, silver and red which is different on every issue which again works well.

This Total Film magazine again has the female slightly right of the page and she is the largest thing on the cover. The picture is studio shot and her head is overlaping the film magazine title, all these suggest the same as the Empire magazine above. However, this front cover doesnt have the actress's name in big and bold writing, they have the film, which they are trying to promote; 'Sex and the City'. This is so the magazine will appeal to their target audience, film lovers. The colour scheme of green, red, black and white works well and the majority of the cover's text is in capital letters to grab attention about what the magazine contains.

This research has inspired us to make our film magazine front cover like these. We have chosen to use the magazine 'Total Film'. And we have got our main protagonist placed slightly right of the page which we will preferably make a studio shot. We are going to use the title of the film the female is from on our front cover, in big and bold writing, as we are trying to promote our film not our actress and so we can appeal to the target audience of film magazines, film lovers. All of the text featured on the front of our magazine will also be in capitals and exclamation marks will be used to grab attention. There will also be a consistent colour scheme of red, white and black which is featured in all of our branding campaign.
